North Uist is an island in the longest archipelago in the British Isles. The Western Isles of Scotland or Outer Hebrides, in Gaelic Na h-Eileanan Siar. The northern group (linked by road) includes Lewis, Haris and Scalpay. The southern group (linked by road) include Berneray,North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay. The island of Barra is at the southern most tip and is a short ferry trip from Eriskay The northern and southern Western Isles groups are linked by a small ferry that runs between Leverburgh, Harris to the island of Berneray.

You can get there by air or by (car then) ferry. Please note, you will be sent detailed directions to the cottage as part of your final confirmation email.

By Car

The journey time from Glasgow to Uig in Skye is approximately 6 hours. Glasgow to Oban is about 3 hours. Note that Scottish highland roads are not easy to drive and you should allow more than less time.

Allow more time in the summer months as the increased tourist traffic can slow you down. You’ll need a comfort break! Crianlarich, Tyndrum, Fort William and Kyle of Lochalsh have public toilets If you’re heading for a ferry ensure you allow ample time, you are expected to arrive at the port 1 hr before the ferry is due to depart.

Driving in the Highlands is about patience over speed. Use passing places and parking areas to pull off and allow faster traffic past you. Be mindful of cyclists. Be aware of cars leaving view point,attraction and café car parks
